2. They're From Newfoundland
While some people assume Labrador Retrievers got their name from the Labrador Sea by Greenland (more on that later), the pups aren't from that area. They're actually from Newfoundland, Canada, even though the Labrador Territory they're named after is northwest of Newfoundland. 

The breed originally arose 500 years ago, before Canada was even Canada. Fishermen from Europe made their way to Newfoundland when it was still a colony, and they brought their dogs with them. These different dog breeds intermingled with each other, and eventually created the Labrador.
